Nazca Hummingbird Geoglyph
Nazca, Ica Region, Peru --- An ancient geoglyph of a hummingbird (colibri in Spanish) on the edge to the Nazca plains was probably inscribed here as an offering for water/fertility in the fields that lie below in the Ingenio Valley. The person(s) who created it in prehistoric times (est. 1,200-2,300 years ago) would have never been able to see the work, as the nearest hills are a few kilometers away. This suggests that it was most likely part of an effort to communicate with the heavens. --- Image by © George Steinmetz/Corbis
