ca. 1200-800 B.C., Uffington, Oxfordshire, England, UK --- Original caption: Striding the lush downs of Southern England are pictures of horses, all finely drawn and just cleaned of their wartime camouflage to present again their age-old problem to modern Britain. Etched in deep white chalk, these white horses, believed to be of some religious significance, were too-prominent landmarks for Nazi bombers to be left uncovered during the war. Whatever their original meaning really was, these strange, huge creatures have been kept in good condition through the centuries and are best seen from the air. Picasso would be proud of this design of a galloping white horse that seems ultra-modern.
